Are You Trying to Do It On Your Own?

Unlock the secret to effective leadership: Discover tips for empowering your team and gaining critical support to enhance performance.

Are You Trying to Do It On Your Own?

I recently returned from California where I had the opportunity to update and re-film my LinkedIn Learning course Managing Employee Performance Problems. (the release date is coming up on December 2nd).

One of the updated concepts of the course is that managers try to do too much on their own rather than have a group of support resources to influence performance.

I wanted to make sure you, who subscribe, get some pre-release tips and info. These tips also coincide with 2 new offerings in my consulting practice.

Getting Support

1. Encouraging Mentors

I really think encouraging folks on your team to find a mentor either inside your organization or outside is not only a great career management tip, but also supports your own leadership and management. It can relieve the sense that it's all on you to be the motivator and change maker.

Encouraging your employees to be active in their own career planning and management can move your relationship from parent to partner. These actions motivate and empower, and also indicate you want your team to be happy and be their best.

If this is something you'd like to do, here are a few resources to help:

  1. We are partnering w/ a global resource for mentorship - It's called The Mentoring Club. You can check them out here.
  2. Liesel Mendoza - the Founder and CEO - kindly wrote a great piece specifically for this e-coach entitled 5 Tips to Becoming an Effective Mentor - you can download it here.
  3. My career planning and management book released earlier this year could be used. Though available on Amazon in the book version, here is a link to your complimentary PDF version.
  4. If you'd like to offer training to your entire team, consider a Lunch & Learn - Everyone gets a PDF version and we can jump-start its usage as part of a teambuilding effort with a virtual workshop. Interested? Email me at joann@joanncorley.com and let's lock in a date.

2. Expertise as Your Partner

Mind Health - For those of you who are familiar with The Distinct Leader Blueprint, you know that Level 1, Building Block #1 - Personal Effectiveness is considered the cornerstone. The cornerstone is the element of constructing a building that everything is set against to align and balance.

That cornerstone is you - as a leader/manager, the cornerstone... And that can be a lot of weight and pressure, particularly if you're not getting the support and training that you need. That weight and pressure can be overwhelming or stressful, even for extended periods of time... And that can be challenging to your mental health. Please note... Some folks minimize this, not realizing or willing to admit that it's really hurting them.

Sometimes we need to rely on outside expertise in this area, not only for our own health, but also for team members. And here's the catch, we may feel that way and think "I could use EAP" (an employee assistance program) if your company has one. Or, it may not be that serious, but it still would be helpful to talk to someone. Remember, feeling healthy has a range.

That's what we are now offering. I have seen that in order to be a solid, consistent "cornerstone", we need to stay mentally healthy. That's why I felt a compelling need to add this to my offerings.

My colleague and dear friend Sue Savage has joined my practice and will be offering mental health support. We're calling it The Expert Ear - an experienced counselor/therapist & teacher who can be there no matter how big or small an issue. We want to provide ease of access and privacy (independent of your company if you desire) at an affordable cost. Learn more here.

If you are the cornerstone, you need to stay mentally healthy!

Leadership/Management - The other part of this kind of support is just getting advice on leadership or management practices. Why struggle when you can have someone with expertise and experience listen to what's going on with your team or department?

If you need some help sorting through the fog of what to do, you can always schedule a short advisory session. If it's something quick, I'm happy to work with you free of charge. Just email me at joann@joanncorley.com or visit the Contact page of my website at www.joanncorley.com.
