  • Be clear on the team values and how they relate to the individual’s role.

2. Setting the Stage:

  • Create a comfortable and private environment for the conversation.
  • Ensure the individual understands the purpose of the meeting is to support their growth and alignment with team values.

3. Discussion Structure:

  • Acknowledge Strengths: Start by recognizing the individual's strengths and contributions.
  • Identify Gap: Highlight specific instance(s) where performance didn’t align with the targeted value.

Coach: “Thanks for meeting with me today, [Name]. I want to start by acknowledging some of the great work you’ve been doing, particularly in [specific area]. Your contributions are valuable to the team.”

Coachee: “Thank you! I appreciate that.”

Coach: “I’d like to discuss how we can better align some aspects of your performance with our team values. For instance, one of our core values is collaboration. I’ve noticed a few instances where your approach has been more independent, such as [specific example]. Can you share your perspective on this?”

Coachee: “I understand. I sometimes feel that I can complete tasks more efficiently on my own.”

Coach: “Efficiency is important, but so is collaboration. When we work together, we leverage diverse perspectives and skills, which can lead to even better outcomes. How do you think you could balance efficiency with collaboration?”

Coachee: “I see your point. Maybe I can start by involving the team earlier in the planning process and seeking their input.”
